The faster you can earn Gold and Apples, the more quickly you can upgrade everything else in your village.
Upgrade as fast as you can your storages, your mines and your apple trees and maximize your total number of each one.
Do not construct too much storage for your resources at the begining cause it will capture your enemy's attention. Try to conceal your wealth by constructing just a few storage locations along with making use of resources prior to your shield goes out.
Then upgrade the castle to make even more of them available.
Good idea is to concentrate your apple trees, gold mines and storages inside the walls, and within range of as many defensive units as possible.
For free gems complete the achievements and the various challenges that pop up.
Clearing out any of the trees and rocks inside your base oftentimes will earn free gems from them.
When you can activate the Horn power up for the first three days after starting the game it will allow you to call back troops that you deploy in battle. You can then reuse those deployed units that did not fall in battle.
