Does The Last of Us 2 have multiplayer? | TLOU2 multiplayer release date

Does The Last of Us 2 have multiplayer? The game is two discs and just over 76 GB so it wouldn’t be outlandish to assume that it’s hidden in there somewhere. The first TLOU game also had Factions multiplayer so the series has gone online. So does TLOU2 have multiplayer? And if not, when is the TLOU2 multiplayer release date?

Does The Last of Us 2 have multiplayer or co-op?

No, The Last of Us 2 does not have any sort of multiplayer mode like the last game (as seen in the above picture). Back in September 2019, Naughty Dog tweeted that the game was simply getting too ambitious for Factions multiplayer.

“We wanted to address multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II,” read the tweet. “As we’ve stated, the single player campaign is far and away the most ambitious project Naughty Dog has ever undertaken. Likewise, as development began on the evolution of our Factions mode from The Last of Us Part I, the vision of the team grew beyond an additional mode that could be included with our enormous single player campaign. Wanting to support both visions, we made the difficult choice that The Last of Us Part II would not include an online mode.”

The tweet continued.

“However, you will eventually experience the fruits of our team’s online ambition, but not as part The Last of Us Part II. When and where it will be realized is still to be determined. But rest assured, we are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready.”

Simply put, we don’t know. And given Naughty Dog’s words, it doesn’t seem like it’ll even be attached to The Last of Us 2. Given this statement and the current pandemic, it seems like we probably won’t be able to play the multiplayer mode for quite some time.

There are a few different ways we could see The Last of Us 2 multiplayer. It is possible that it’ll be a separate game that could be a premium or a free-to-play experience. Naughty Dog did make Uncharted 3‘s multiplayer free-to-play just a little more than a year after it launched. And Uncharted 4‘s online had plenty of microtransaction hooks in it, making a free-to-play game more of a likely option.

It’s also possible it will be part of some eventual PS5 port. Naughty Dog has not spoken about putting The Last of Us 2 on the PS5, but it’s hard to imagine it won’t eventually migrate its way to that platform. The first game also released the June before the next PlayStation and saw a remastered version about a year later. Naughty Dog even updated Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Remastered with PS4 Pro support when that enhanced console launched, further showing the team’s dedication to update its games to show off new Sony hardware.

Given this history, it wouldn’t be impractical to see Naughty Dog release a “remastered,” Game of the Year version of The Last of Us 2 with better visuals and a multiplayer mode on the PS5. Sony would probably need to cater existing to PS4 owners as well, which makes this all a little more murky than it already is.
