Xbox Series X Controller

Xbox Series X|S Controller Rechargeable Battery | Is it compatible with Play and Charge Kit?

Best Answer: The Xbox Series X|S controller comes with non-rechargeable AA batteries. However, there are several rechargeable products that are compatible with the gamepad.

Charging the Xbox Series X|S controller is possible, at least if it’s equipped with the right battery. Unlike the DualSense, which has a sealed battery, the Series X|S controller can use several different power delivery methods, including the Xbox One Play & Charge kit. However, due to the new pad’s slightly different profile, not all Xbox One controller batteries are compatible.

We’ve tested several methods of providing power to the Xbox Series X|S controller. For the most part, the new gamepad retains its predecessor’s versatility, but some accessories are no longer compatible.

How to charge the Xbox Series X|S controller

Upon viewing the Xbox Series X|S controller for the first time, owners will likely notice the inclusion of a USB-C port. This may make users think that Microsoft included a rechargeable battery, but that’s not the case. The Xbox Series X|S controller comes with two AA batteries, just like the Xbox 360 and Xbox One gamepads did.

If a player is environmentally conscious (or just doesn’t want to have to get up for batteries when their gamepad dies), they will want to get a rechargeable battery pack for the Xbox Series X|S controller. However, there aren’t any new rechargeable batteries specifically for the new pad at launch, of which we’re aware. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to this problem.

The Xbox Series X|S controller can use the same Play & Charge Kit that was designed for the Xbox One gamepad. The battery can charge via the controller’s built-in USB-C port and works just as well as always has. Rechargeable AA batteries also work just fine.

Unfortunately, third-party battery packs, specifically those that require users to install a new back cover, are likely not going to work with the Xbox Series X|S controller. The battery itself will fit, but the Xbox Series X|S’s design is just different enough from the Xbox One controller that the back covers aren’t compatible.
