You're invincible in the very beginning so don't worry about falling in battle during the prologue.
Keep in mind you have individual (and limited) character inventories as well as a general "bag" everything can go in.
Put stuff you won't use in your bag so you can pick more stuff up later.
If you find yourself having trouble with an area or boss, go fight weaker enemies to gain character levels.
You can also use the gold you earn to buy stronger equipment that will help you fight stronger enemies.
