Will PlayStation be at E3 2021?: Will Sony hold an E3 State of Play?

According to the schedule that dropped this week, PlayStation won’t be making a showing at E3 2021, the year’s biggest gaming event. This isn’t new, Sony hasn’t had a presence at E3 since 2018, but fans wonder whether there’ll be a State of Play during E3 week to sate our curiosity.

PS5 Queued for Copy fix

Sony will once again be skipping E3 in 2021. For whatever reason, PlayStation feels like it can showcase its games better on its own. While other large companies have opted out of E3 in the past, Sony is the only major hardware manufacturer to eschew the event.

Sony didn’t even officially announce it would be skipping E3 this year. Instead, its absence on the official E3 2021 schedule tipped us off that it would decline to appear.

Will there be an E3 State of Play?

PlayStation State of Play december 102019

Even though Sony isn’t going to be part of E3 officially, nothing is stopping it from going down the same route EA does and holding its own event in the same timeframe. Sony typically announces its State of Play streams a few days beforehand, so it’s entirely possible we could get one next week.

However, we just don’t know how much Sony actually has to show. God of War: Ragnarok has been delayed into 2022, and there are not that many PS4 and PS5 exclusives with firm release dates. We recently got a State of Play featuring Horizon: Forbidden West, but even it is still saddled with an ambiguous “2021” release window. It’s entirely possible that Sony may not be attending E3 because it doesn’t have anything major it’s ready to show from its first-party studios.

Despite Sony’s absence, this E3 is poised to be a big one. Commitments from Nintendo, Xbox, Bethesda, Square Enix, Capcom, Ubisoft, and other major publishers mean we’re about to see some exciting announcements when E3 2021 kicks off on June 12.
