Good way to keep your continue tokens safe is to create checkpoints only as you're approaching the more challenging gauntlets.
Remember you can swipe down on the screen to retreat a step if necessary.
Don't neglect treasure maps and keys as you explore each level.
Keep in mind that gathering all maps in a given world allows you to access a secret level, and at the end of that level you'll find an extra token you can use to continue.
When you come across a red tile, you should expect something nasty coming your way.
