Apple Wallet drivers license id state list

Which states will let you use Apple Wallet for a digital driver’s license or ID?

Pretty soon, people will be able to add their state IDs and driver’s licenses to their Apple Wallet. While this was previously announced, we didn’t know how this new feature would roll out. However, we finally have the list of the first states that will allow IDs and licenses to be added to Apple Wallet.

Which states will allow IDs and driver’s licenses to be added to Apple Wallet?

Apple Wallet Drivers License ID States

Apple released a list of the first eight states which will allow digital IDs and driver’s licenses to be added to Apple Wallet. The feature will roll out in these two states first:

  • Arizona
  • Georgia

Followed by six more:

  • Connecticut
  • Iowa
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah

According to Apple’s press release, licenses and IDs will be added to Wallet just as credit cards and transit passes are now. Users will be able to tap the “+” button in Wallet and select that they want to add their ID or license. They can then scan their license or ID card. They’ll then need to take a selfie that will be sent to the issuing state to verify their identity. Users will also need to complete a series of facial and head movements during setup to prove they’re not just taking a picture of a picture. Once the license or ID is verified, it’ll be added to the Apple Wallet.

Once a driver’s license or state ID is added to Apple Wallet, users can transmit the information by tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch against an identity reader. The device will then prompt users to authorize data transmission with Face ID or Touch ID. Only the requested info is shared, and users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over a device to present ID.

There’s no ETA as to when the above states will activate the ability to add licenses and IDs to Apple Wallet. The ability to do so won’t be available until iOS 15 gets a public launch, which should occur with the release of the iPhone 13.
