PS5 System Software Update 2.0: Patch notes today and what’s new

The latest PS5 system software update goes live today, bringing with it a plethora of new improvements to Sony’s latest console. From UI changes to system storage upgrades, it brings with it several changes that PS5 owners have been pining for since release last year. We’ve got all the details on the PS5 system software update 2.0, so you know exactly what to expect.

PS5 System Software Update 2.0

Perhaps the most noticeable upgrade in system software update 2.0 is tweaks to the PS5 UX. The Control Center is getting a facelift, as you can now choose which widgets appear at the bottom of the screen when you press the PlayStation button. Similarly, you can now send messages and view party groups directly from the Game Base, saving time sifting through menus.

Game tiles also now display which platform they’re for, meaning if you’ve got the PS4 and PS5 versions of a game installed, you can easily discern between the two. This is alongside the introduction of Screen Reader controls. These provide accessibility by reading out any on-screen text at the hit of a button. On top of this, you can now customize which trophies are displayed in the Trophy Tracker, as well as new Accolade titles, automatic Capture Gallery instructions, and a resolution toggle for PS Now.

The update is also very exciting on the hardware side. You can now hook up surround-sound TV speakers to 3D audio, providing a much more immersive speaker experience. Most anticipated of all is the ability to upgrade the PS5 SSD, which will work with both PS4 and PS5 games. If you want to know more about the M.2 SSD upgrades, check out our guide here.

Lastly, PlayStation is bolstering older systems. The PlayStation mobile app can now run Remote Play over mobile data, instead of exclusively Wi-Fi. You’ll also be able to use the Share Screen function on mobile, to watch a friend’s gameplay. Lastly, PS4 players can now view their friends’ PS5 trophies. Both consoles can also disband parties without kicking out all members now.

There’s a lot here, but Sony announced even more at last week’s PlayStation Showcase. Find out about Spider-Man 2 co-op, as well as the God of War Ragnarok trailer.
