Here are several New World audio glitches and how to fix sound in the game:

  • No sound bug fix
    • Disable in-game voice chat via the Settings menu.
    • Close and reboot the New World game application.
  • Muffled sound effects (underwater-style audio) fix
    • Open and close the inventory screen.
    • Alt + Tab out of the game, then back in.
    • Kill and relaunch the New World application.
  • Missing ambient background music fix
    • Shut the New World application.
    • Verify the game files on Steam:
      • Navigate to the Library tab.
      • Right-click New World, then select “Properties” from the list.
      • Select “Local files,” then “Verify integrity of game files” via the menu.
    • Reset in-game settings back to default.
  • Looping sound effects on repeat fix
    • If relating to a Point of Interest or Region notification, leave the area.
    • Reboot the New World PC app.
  • Wireless headphones not working fix
    • Open the in-game Settings menu.
    • Switch to the Communication section.
    • Change “XM3 Headset” to “XM3 Stereo” on this screen.

Note that, during the launch window, rebooting New World can send players to the back of long server queues. While closing and relaunching the game is a common solution, it might be worth living with an audio bug for the remainder of a play session for anyone that doesn’t want to risk long delays.
