Guardians of the Galaxy Game: Best abilities to upgrade for Star-Lord, Drax, Rocket, Gamora, and Groot

Marvel’s Guardian of the Galaxy game has a bunch of unlockable abilities for its characters Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and Groot, with each of them able to activate special moves that tear up enemies before going on cooldown. But what are the best abilities in GotG and which ones should you unlock and upgrade first? Here’s what you need to know.

Guardians of the Galaxy Game: Best abilities for all characters

guardians of the galaxy game best abilities

The best abilities in the Guardians of the Galaxy game are spread across damage-dealing moves and moves that set up other special attacks, as the Guardians work together seamlessly in order to take down enemies. Here’s which ones you should upgrade first for Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot.

Note that this doesn’t include the ultimate abilities that can be unlocked for each character as you progress through the story, given that these are immediately usable after unlocked them without having to spend any points (and they verge on spoiler territory).

Best Star-Lord abilities

The best Star-Lord ability is Fan the Hammer, which allows Peter Quill to unleash rapid-fire blaster shots that deal heavy damage spread across multiple enemies. This is great for swiftly taking down a single tanky enemy or multiple enemies, though it does take into account Quill’s higher damage at close range, meaning that it won’t be as effective if you’re standing a distance away from opponents. The rest of his abilities aren’t as useful, though Vantage Point can be helpful in a bind in order to get yourself off the ground and away from enemies.

  • Vantage Point
  • Fan the Hammer
  • Eye of the Hurricane

Best Gamora abilities

The best Gamora ability is Shadow Strike, which sees her dash between enemies and dealing moderate damage, or attacking a single enemy multiple times. This ability can be used in tandem with Rocket’s enter, allowing her to make short work of many enemies at once as they are grouped together. Deadly Strike is ideal for hitting single targets with a lot of power, which is preferable when in boss battles but not when facing larger groups.

  • Deadly Strike
  • Shadow Strike
  • Stagger Wave

Best Drax abilities

The best Drax ability is Pound and Pummel, which slams several enemies into the air and allows for other Guardians to launch into their own attacks. Use Star-Lord’s Fan the Hammer after this has been activated to deal out tons of damage to enemies lying on the floor.

  • Destroy
  • Katathian Charge
  • Pound and Pummel

Best Groot abilities

The best Groot ability is Mammoth Grab, which grabs a single enemy for a lengthy period of time leaving them vulnerable to attacks. While it’s only useful in certain circumstances, such as when you’re fighting super-tough elite enemies, when it works it can have a huge impact.

  • Entangle
  • Groot
  • Mammoth Grab

Best Rocket abilities

Rocket’s best ability is the Gravistack Grenade, which pulls all nearby enemies into one position, letting you hit a follow-up attack in the process. The low cooldown of this ability allows players to pull it out of the bag almost at will, which makes it routinely useful.

  • Cluster Flark Bomb
  • Gravistack Grenade
  • Glowing Pains Grenade
