Halo Infinite SBMM

Halo Infinite SBMM: Does it have skill-based matchmaking?

SBMM, or skill-based matchmaking, is an often controversial feature in popular online multiplayer games. As such, users are wondering if there’s a Halo Infinite SBMM system to level the playing field and make matches more intense. Here’s the need-to-know info on Halo Infinite skill-based matchmaking for Xbox Series X, Series S, Xbox One, and PC.

Does Halo Infinite have skill-based matchmaking (SBMM)?

Halo Infinite SBMM

Yes, Halo Infinite has skill-based matchmaking. The new Halo title features SBMM and an in-game ranking system for competitive Ranked Matches, further influencing the matching process.

The Halo series is no stranger to skill-based matchmaking. In fact, Bungie helped to pioneer the SBMM system with the release of Halo 2 back in 2004 on the original Xbox. Now, several console generations later and with 343 Industries at the helm, the mechanic is returning in Halo Infinite.

While SBMM should improve game balance by carefully placing participants into lobbies, many players don’t believe that it works. An even match on paper often doesn’t materialize in reality, causing some to believe that the (potentially) longer matchmaking times in SBMM games aren’t worth the wait. It’s still too early to say whether or not this is the case for Halo Infinite on Xbox and PC (Steam and Game Pass).

Any console players feeling like they’re at a disadvantage, despite the presence of Halo Infinite skill-based matchmaking, might be onto something. While it isn’t possible to disable crossplay in the game, users can opt out of facing mouse and keyboard opponents; to do so, simply tweak the preferred controller input when playing Ranked Matches online.
