Is Modern Warfare 2 2022 going to be free to play?
While the main game isn’t free to play, the sequel of Warzone is expected to be and there are also rumors of an “Escape from Tarkov” inspired DMZ mode.
While going free to play can be incredibly lucrative for some franchises, Activision has built a loyal paying fanbase for its annual Call of Duty releases. Therefore, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 isn’t expected to go totally free to play anytime soon.
What are the Modern Warfare 2 2022 free-to-play modes?
Warzone 2 and the DMZ game modes are expected to be free to play.
Like with Call of Duty: Warzone, the sequel to the hit battle royale is also expected to be free to play. Warzone 2 is expected to make money through the battle pass and purchasable cosmetic items.
Rumors suggest that the DMZ mode, which is supposed to be PvPvE and inspired by survival games like Tarkov, will also be a free-to-play experience.
Call of Duty Twitter leaker, @RalphsValve has claimed that DMZ, which is currently named “Project Nexus” internally, will be set to release in 2023 and be free-to-play. If this proves true, then DMZ won’t be launching in late October with the main portion of the game.

At the time of writing, there has been no official word on what players should expect from a free-to-play Call of Duty in 2022. This will likely be revealed closer to the October 28 launch date.
