Overwatch 2: Is PS Plus Needed to Play on PS5 and PS4?

Overwatch 2 is the latest free-to-play game to be released on PS4 and PS5. While PlayStation Plus is usually required to play multiplayer games, some free-to-play games allow players to take part without it. Here’s our guide to whether PS Plus is needed to play Overwatch 2 on PS5 and PS4.

Is PS Plus required to play Overwatch 2?

PS Plus is not required to play Overwatch 2 on PS5 and PS4. At the moment, though, the biggest challenge is getting connected to the game’s servers. There have been large queues for the servers, game crashes, and plenty of error messages. Now Blizzard Entertainment has made changes to the queue process and applied a patch to the servers to cope with the large amount of players trying to get into the game.

Players do need to sign up for a Battle.net account, though. New players also need to register a cell phone number to activate SMS Protection. Those who already had a Battle.net account prior to the game’s release will not need to register a phone number. This is to try and reduce the number of cheaters getting access to the game but has unfortunately had the side effect of excluding players who use certain prepaid networks
