CS2 Tick Rate Changes

CS2 Tick Rate Changes: Counter-Strike 2 ‘Sub-Tick Updates’ Explained

The CS2 tick rate changes are going to be game-changers for competitive play. Valve has left behind 64 tick rate servers and blown right by 128 tick rate, instead introducing “Sub-Tick Updates” to Counter-Strike 2. What exactly does this mean? Here’s an explanation of the CSGO 2 tick rate improvements.

CS2 Tick Rate Change: Is it 128 or 64?

The CS2 tick rate is neither 128 nor 64, as Valve is using a feature called “Sub-Tick Updates” for even more precision.

When CSGO continued to use 64, many players were hoping to see 128 tick rate servers eventually come to the game. While that never happened with CSGO, CS2 will be introducing more responsive servers.

What are CS2 “Sub-Tick Updates?”

CS2 “Sub-Tick Updates” allow the game to bypass the server tick rate and track moving and shooting separately from the server refresh.

This should all make for a more responsive experience, with all players on the server seeing the same player position and shooting timings. In theory, every player on the server should see and hear gunshots at the same exact time, leading to more consistency and an overall more competitive experience.
