Mortal Kombat 1 PS4, Xbox One Versions: Is MK1 Coming to Last-Gen Consoles?

Mortal Kombat 1 PS4 and Xbox One versions would open up the game’s base of players even more, as this is NetherRealm Studios’ first original title to debut on the current batch of consoles. However, studios sometimes move on from older platforms. Here’s whether or not MK1 is coming to PS4 and Xbox One.

Is MK1 coming to PS4 or Xbox One?

Mortal Kombat 1 is not currently on PS4 or Xbox One. It has not been announced for those two platforms, either, so it is unlikely to come to those systems.

The game is on Nintendo Switch, so it can technically run on lower-end hardware. That said, it still does not seem like MK1 PS4 or Xbox One ports are in the cards for NetherRealm. The team even canceled PS3 and Xbox 360 ports of Mortal Kombat X back near that title’s launch, so it doesn’t have a habit of supporting old consoles after their time is up.

Art development director Thiago Gomes even talked up the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. He spoke highly about what the newly afforded power offered the team and explained how players will be able to notice details like stitches on Li Mei’s costume and the lushness of its maps.

“With the new consoles, we have a lot more power to show a lot more little interactions, including the little robot that comes in and cleans up all the blood,” Gomes said.

Series co-creator Ed Boon also praised the SSD in the newer systems. He noted that NetherRealm can “load in these crazy detailed backgrounds that before would have taken so long to upload.”

Some games do get ported backwards, meaning it is somewhat in the realm of possibilities for Mortal Kombat 1. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Metal: Hellsinger, and Destroy All Humans 2: Reprobed are all part of that camp. But it doesn’t seem like Mortal Kombat 1 will be one of those titles (at least not yet) given the team’s history and lack of official announcement.

MK1 Last-Gen FAQ

Q: Will Mortal Kombat 1 be available on PS4 or Xbox One?

A: No, Mortal Kombat 1 is not currently available on PS4 or Xbox One and hasn’t been announced for these platforms. It’s unlikely to be released on those systems given NetherRealm Studios’ history.

Q: What has the art development director Thiago Gomes said about the new consoles?

A: Thiago Gomes emphasized the power of the new consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, highlighting that they allow for finer details such as stitches on characters’ costumes and richer, more detailed maps. He also mentioned the ability to show minor interactions, like a robot cleaning up the aftermath of a fight.

Q: Have other games been ported to older platforms despite being designed for newer ones?

A: Yes, some games, like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Metal: Hellsinger, and Destroy All Humans 2: Reprobed, have been ported backwards. However, given NetherRealm Studios’ past decisions and the lack of an official announcement, it doesn’t seem likely for Mortal Kombat 1 at this time.
