Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Split-Screen | How to play co-op

Much of the fun of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare involves playing with friends. As such, playing Modern Warfare split-screen is an attractive option. How to play split-screen in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Modern Warfare split-screen co-op Spec Ops

If you want to play Modern Warfare split-screen, you won’t be able to do so outside of the game’s multiplayer offerings. Split-screen co-op is currently only available in select multiplayer modes, specifically Spec Ops. Split-screen play is not available for the main campaign.

In order to play Modern Warfare split-screen, you’ll need a second PlayStation 4 or Xbox One controller. Other than that, the second player will also need to sign into an Activision account. This is a rather unfortunate requirement, as there’s no option to simply pick up a second controller and dive into cooperative game modes.

Assuming the aforementioned requirements have been fulfilled, getting into split-screen play is simple. Load up the game, and from the main menu, press the corresponding button to connect a second controller — A on the Xbox One or X on the PlayStation 4. From here, you must select Multiplayer game modes. It’s confusing, but you can’t choose the Co-op option, as the game will warn that split-screen play is not supported.

Within the Multiplayer menu, you’ll be able to choose between a few different game modes. If the chosen game mode doesn’t support split-screen play, a warning prompt will pop up asking if you want to disconnect the second player. Of course, the main draw will be split-screen Spec Ops, which was added into the game following its release.

It’s a convoluted system for sure, but with a little persistence, players can enjoy Modern Warfare split-screen. Weirdly, the co-op mode does not offer split-screen play, even though local multiplayer modes do support co-op.
