The latest issue of Famitsu (via Gematsu) details Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness, the next entry in the series from Square Enix and developer tri-Ace. The game is in development for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
Star Ocean 5 features real-time battles with unique combos depending on the distance between the player and enemy. It also includes "seamless events" in which enemies can defeat party members and create branching scenarios.
As far as the premise is concerned, Star Ocean 5 takes place on a desolate planet called Feycreed, which is located 6,000 light years away from Earth. It's set in the year 537, which means it takes place in between Star Ocean 2 and Star Ocean 3. Characters include Fedel the protagonist, his childhood friend Miki, and an amnesiac character named Lilia.
The Famitsu article includes an interview with producer Shuichi Kobayashi in which he talks about his role with the company and the influences for Star Ocean 5.
“[Having previously been in marketing] I decided to change positions and become a producer out of the belief that Star Ocean is worth staking my life and legacy on,” he said. "For Star Ocean 5, I wanted the game to overtly take cues from Star Ocean 3 and draw its essence from that game.”
Developer tri-Ace is working on Star Ocean 5 for PS3, and the game will be ported to PS4. No specific release date was revealed, but the game is 30 percent complete at the moment.
