Nintendo Finally Throws in the Towel on TVii Service

R.I.P., Nintendo TVii.

After a lackluster three-year run, Nintendo has confirmed it will be shutting down its television service, Nintendo TVii, on August 11 at 3PM PT. Additionally, the service's accompanying Miiverse community is being removed.

In a post on Miiverse, Nintendo released the following statement: "We sincerely thank you for all of your engagement within the community and the Nintendo TVii service. We look forward to your contributions within our many other Miiverse communities."

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced the cancelation of TVii support for Europe, before it was even made available in the region. I guess the Big N saw the writing on the wall and figured it wasn't worth the added effort.

What do you make of the news? Is this just another nail in the Wii U's coffin? Was it a mistake for Nintendo to pursue such a multimedia service in the first place? When the company does inevitably launch its successor, codenamed NX, would you like to see it feature some sort of multimedia component, or be strictly about games?
