Mattel Announces Gamer Barbie

The big news at Mattel this week is its introduction of a wide range of new Barbie dolls. Although a lot of the attention has been placed on the various shapes and sizes of the new Barbie cast, its Game Developer Barbie might just be the most surprising of the bunch.

The upcoming Game Developer Barbie comes equipped with a gaming headset, laptop, eyeglasses, and all. Arriving this Summer, Mattel is hoping it'll appeal to the growing number of young girls who enjoy video games.

Although Mattel has put in the work to make the Game Developer Barbie a detailed piece, it's missing a proper gaming device. The package comes with a laptop on a stand, and that's all. There's no gaming controller or Alienware PC. It is assumed that this Barbie is a Farmville addict who programs on an Apple Macbook.

Nonetheless, it's a far cry from the origins of Barbie, and maybe, just maybe, could help introduce more young people to game development.
