Dark Souls 3’s PC Version Has a Crashing Issue With An Odd Fix

After an almost unbearable wait, Dark Souls 3 has finally arrived in the West. As most critics indicated, it's a very special game, and one that certainly will be up for game of the year nomination among several outlets.

Among the releases is a PC version, which comes equipped with potential for higher FPS and graphics than its console-based brothers. These benefits have had many PC gamers excited for months. Sadly, a few have been let down by a significant glitch at launch.

Hundreds of PC gamers are reporting that Dark Souls 3's PC version crashes shortly after making a character. The issue appears to happen frequently, enough that it prevents proper progress for most players affected by the issue.

Several of these gamers have taken to the game's Steam page to post a negative review warning other gamers of the frustrations they might similarly face, while others have taken to forums, social media, and Reddit to discuss the issue and find a culprit.

So far, no correlation has been found between affected players, but there does appear to be a temporary fix. Several users have stated that making a character as the Knight class appears to remedy the issue. It's no coincidence, either. These same players have stated that if they remove their Knight head armor, they crash. This detail may provide a vital role in the crashes being fixed by FromSoftware.

If you are being affected by the issue, consider making a Knight. I beat Dark Souls 3 using the Knight and can attest to its effectiveness.

In the event that you aren't a fan of Knights, you may want to try playing the game on the Low graphics preset. Several gamers have shared that this has fixed the issue for them.

FromSoftware has not made a statement on the issue. However, it has updated the game several times during pre-launch, including the release of the v1.03 patch that fixed many performance issues. We're hopeful that a fix will be deployed in a timely manner.
