Yoshinori Ono Emphasizes That Wii U Has Special Abilities

There was definitely a shock factor involved when Nintendo took the stage and announced the Wii U at E3 last year, but a lot of that devolved into skepticism after we started thinking about its real-world application. There's no getting around it, holding a giant object with a screen mounted on it and using it as a controller is a foreign concept, and using the screen to interact with a TV is even more strange. But Nintendo has invested heavily in the console, and Capcom's Yoshinori Ono is a believer.

Yoshinori Ono has had some hands-on time with the Wii U and stated the following during an interview:

What we saw last E3 is not a reflection of everything this console [Wii U] is able to offer.

He continued:

…let's say that Wii U will be a console with so many unique possibilities that it will be difficult to show them on the box they are going to sell it in or on magazines and other mediums.

Even if it's difficult to explain the capabilties of the console, merely having the Nintendo name forged on the box is enough to sell it. However, marketing is extremely important to doing well in the gaming industry, and showing a kid holding a giant white saucer with a screen on it while his friends watch him have fun doesn't sound like it'll work this time around. Wii U has some interesting ideas to offer, but Nintendo will have to invest heavily in giving it an unforgettable identity if they want it to be even close to as popular as the Wii was.
