Sony: No PS4 Anytime Soon; Focus Is On PS3, Vita

All this year so far, all of the rumor talk has been focused on the next generation of consoles, more specifically, the next Xbox and the PS4. And while it seems likely that Microsoft will indeed have something to show at this year's E3, Sony on the other hand, will not.

On top of Kaz Hirai's comments stating that there wouldn't be a PS4 reveal at E3, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton has reiterated those claims in a recent interview with IGN.

…right now, we're focused on PlayStation 3, and I've got another platform (PlayStation Vita) to get out the door in seven days, so I don't want to be thinking about trying to launch new technology anytime soon. I want to focus all our energy on our console business, which is really just hitting its stride, and Vita, which really deserves a dedicated push from us.

Tretton continued:

I, quite frankly, would be very distracted if I had to be talking about next generation hardware this year.

It seems that Sony will be pre-empted by Microsoft yet again, which could end up hurting the PlayStation brand further. Microsoft was able to capture a massive market share from Sony, due to releasing the Xbox 360 an entire year ahead. And while this could mean that, like the PS3, the PS4 will end up being the more powerful machine by far, publishers usually seek the lowest common denominator for multiplatform development, which will negate any power advantages the PS4 has over whatever the next Xbox is called.

Tell GR: Is this a mistake on Sony's part? Can they afford to be last to the market again?
