Ubisoft Positioning Itself To Be The “Number One Third-Party On Wii U”

While third-third party relations aren't necessarily Nintendo's strong suit, it looks like Ubisoft is going to work hard to support the Wii U, as the publisher aims to be the console's top third-party studio. Speaking to Gamasutra, Tony Key, the SVP of sales and marketing at Ubisoft explained that the company's plan is to support the Wii U like they have with Microsoft's Kinect platform and the 3DS.

Nintendo and Ubisoft have grown to be close friends over the years, and judging by the onslaught of Wii U launch titles they have in the cooker, things are getting pretty serious. "We've always had a really close relationship with Nintendo, so I'd venture to say that we did have an advantage in getting dev kits earlier than other people. I'm not saying we got them earlier than everyone, but I do think we got them early," Key said. As of right now, there are a total of four Ubisoft titles confirmed for the WIi U's launch, including Raving Rabbids, Killer Freaks from Outer SpaceTom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online and Assassin's Creed 3.

Unfortunately, being buddy-buddy with Ubisoft simply isn't going to be enough to give the Wii U the compelling library it so desperately needs to compete against the likes of the PS4 and Xbox 720, especially in light of the recent reports that this new hardware is actually inferior to the current generation PlayStation and Xbox. Sorry Nintendo, but I'm going to want to play Assassin's Creed 3 on my PS3, especially if it's going to look better and launch a month or two earlier. As for the other three titles… can't say I'd want to play them anyway.
