Tomb Raider Delayed to Q1 2013

First BioShock, now this?! It brings me great displeasure to inform you that Crystal Dynamics has just announced that their Tomb Raider reboot, originally set to launch later this year, has been pushed to the first quarter of 2013. Fortunately the developer didn't leave us hanging completely, as studio head Darrell Gallagher elaborated on the reason for the setback, explaining on the game's official blog that they're really afraid of Assassin's Creed they really just want to be sure they deliver the best experience possible.

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months,” Gallagher explained.

Considering the fact that we haven't seen much of anything from this game since its jaw-dropping debut at last year's expo, the delay shouldn't come as all that much of a surprise. Crystal is a team clearly dedicated to reviving Tomb Raider (again) in a way that breathes new life into the franchise, and they better believe they've got a hefty portion of the gaming community rooting for them.

E3 is only a few weeks away and the developer is planning to show a lot more of the game at that time. "We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.” Mr. Gallagher, we can't wait.
