A new The Lord of the Rings game is in development at a reputed AAA studio, per a new report. This is in addition to the previously rumored The Lord of the Rings game from a critically acclaimed Czech developer.
Tomb Raider developers reportedly making new Lord of the Rings game
Earlier this week, Insider Gaming reported that a new The Lord of the Rings game is in development at Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider games. The studio will reportedly work alongside other studios, such as Embracer and Revenge.
Furthermore, the outlet’s sources claim that the studio has received $100 million in funding from Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). The game is reportedly being designed to “compete with Hogwarts Legacy”. When asked about a release timeline, the source said it was still “a bit away”.
Currently, there have been no official announcements to support the claim. Nonetheless, the outlet’s sources added that Crystal Dynamics will work on LOTR along with its current lineup. Notably, the California-based studio is presently working on Tomb Raider: Catalyst, a new title in the iconic franchise, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a reimagining of the 1996 classic. CD announced both titles at the 2025 Game Awards.
This LOTR game is in addition to another LOTR game rumored to be in development at the Czech-based developer, Warhorse Studios. They previously developed the two Kingdom Come: Deliverance games. Similarly, the studio has not made any official announcements.
Every few years, a new The Lord of the Rings surfaces. However, the past few games have not been commercially successful. The last acclaimed game was Middle-Earth: Shadow of War in 2017. It was developed by Monolith Productions, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Games. The game was highly praised for its Nemesis system. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. Games shut down Monolith Productions in February 2025.
