THQ Nordic has announced that Red Faction Guerrilla will be receiving a remaster soon. The remaster, dubbed Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered, comes not only with a pun-derful name but also many improvements for it to be released on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
According to the press release, the game is slated to be released in Q2 2018. The so-called Re-Mars-tered edition will feature fully-reworked graphics with improved textures and specular maps, as well as improved shadow rendering and lighting. The shader and post-processing will also be reworked.
The developer confirmed that Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered will have native 4K resolution support. Red Faction Guerrilla was originally released back in 2009 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. It was the third game in the Red Faction franchise.
The game is set 50 years after the events of the original Red Faction, where players assume the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle to liberate Mars from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. The game was notable for its open-world destruction-based gameplay, which boasted true physics when it came to the reducing buildings to rubble.
The Red Faction franchise has been on a hiatus since 2011, which was when Red Faction Armageddon was released. In that same year, we reported that then-current THQ CEO Brian Farrell said that Red Faction Armageddon “did not resonate with a sufficiently broad console gaming audience” and that the publisher would not “carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way”.
In other related news, THQ Nordic bought publisher Koch Media last month, thereby gaining access to the Saints Row and Metro game franchises. Last year, THQ Nordic announced that Darksiders 3 was in development for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. THQ Nordic’s great run began when Nordic Games bought THQ and changed its name to THQ Nordic back in 2014.
