LawBreakers Free-to-Play Isn’t Happening as Boss Key Moves On to Passion Project

LawBreakers free-to-play isn’t going to happen anytime soon. Boss Key Productions has broken their silence with a blog post, in which an explanation for the game’s failure to “find enough of an audience,” its inability to switch to a free-to-play model due to the required “publishing planning and resources,” and the developer’s future plans were detailed.

LawBreakers Free-to-Play Isn’t Happening

LawBreakers is going to be supported in “its current state.” This means that the game will be remaining as is, while still kept online. Players will be able to access the game, but they shouldn’t expect any new updates or content drops. Boss Key has acknowledged the idea of changing to free-to-play, but ultimately shot it down, explaining that “a pivot to free-to-play may seem like the easiest change to make, [but] a change of this magnitude takes publishing planning and resources to do it.”

A possible “second life” for LawBreakers hasn’t been ruled out, but new projects require the team’s attention. Though unspecific in what exactly the next Boss Key game will be, the developer does state that it will involve “fresh creative leaders” and that it will be “a passion project that [Boss Key] is in complete control of.”

While it’s sad to see LawBreakers flop so hard, so quickly, the game’s PC player count has proven that not many gamers are interested, and so this news shouldn’t hit too hard.

Lawbreakers Free-to-Play

LawBreakers released at the wrong time, with Overwatch stealing the spotlight. It also suffered from mixed marketing messages, where some players still expected free-to-play as originally advertised. The game also felt like it had launched a few years too late, where exo-suits and flying through the air were themes that had been pretty much exhausted by a trio of futuristic Call of Duty games.
