Pokemon Quest Android and iOS versions are now available to download for free on the App Store and Google Play. Much like the Switch counterpart, there are going to be in-app purchases that allow you to buy additional power stones and other items that you can use.
Pokemon Quest takes place on Tumblecube Island, where every rock, tree, and inhabitant is a cube-based entity. Its visual direction has drawn a lot of comparisons to voxel-based games, like Minecraft or the long-dead open-world RPG, Cubeworld. It’s also a look that you get to mess around within the game itself, albeit in a home design way; each player has a base camp that can be decorated with collectables and furniture, some purely aesthetic and some with in-game benefits.
If you’ve played other Pokemon games, Pokemon Quest will look quite different from a gameplay perspective. It’s like a cutesy fusion of Animal Crossing and an RTS, with you in control of a squad of three pokemon exploring the world for treasure, cooking up tasty treats, and fighting wild pokemon by tactically timing different attacks and dodges. These pokemon can also be customised with power stones, that add effect modifiers like increased critical hit damage and resistance to certain effects.
Pokemon Quest first launched on the Nintendo Switch in May. It’s been pretty successful, with over a million downloads on the system worldwide since then. The launch on mobile is something that we’ve known about, and it’s likely to be even more popular here. Pokemon Quest‘s design ethos is a Nintendo-ified mobile game standard that we’ve seen in a lot of other successful games on the platform.
Combined with Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu, it looks like Game Freak and Nintendo are once again experimenting with departures from the standard Pokemon formula. With the next mainline Pokemon 2019 game expected next year, it’s nice to see a broader variety of Pokemon games with the comfort of soon returning to the traditional setup. You can download Pokemon Quest now for free on Android and iOS.
