343i Discusses The Pressures In Being The “Underdog” Halo Developer

Hooray! Halo 4 is now sitting happily on stores shelves just waiting to be purchased. If you have any interest in the franchise whatsoever, I highly recommend you pick it up, as 343 Industries did an incredible job breathing new life into the franchise.

Before they knocked critic's socks off however, the overwhelming majority of the gaming public was quite skeptical as to whether or not Halo 4 would live up to expectations now that Bungie has moved on to other things. As a brand-new and untested studio, 343i had a lot to prove, but it was this pressure that motivated them to create such an amazing product.

Speaking to CVG, executive producer Kiki Wolfkill explained:

Everyone stepped in to this knowing how big a challenge it was going to be. We knew the pressure was going to be there, and ultimately we put the most pressure on ourselves to deliver something that we believed in and the fans could believe in. It absolutely empowered us.

I think there was a sense for us as kind of being the underdog as well, which I think was part of the emotional motivation behind the team, because everyone who came to 343 had a certain level of success – and in some cases a lot of success. So this was an achievement that was really meaningful.

Halo 4 is out today exclusively for the Xbox 360. If you haven't already done so, be sure to read our review of 343i's killer sci-fi shooter.
