A new Detective Pikachu trailer was released today, showcasing a whole lot of the upcoming movie’s realistic take on Pokémon. The new trailer for the live-action adaptation of the Nintendo 3DS game is slated to release on May 10.
Warner Bros. Pictures released the new trailer, the second full-length trailer for Pokémon Detective Pikachu, earlier today. The trailer begins with voiceover from Ryan Reynolds’ Detective Pikachu, describing how he came to find Justice Smith’s Tim Goodman. The two end up teaming up to find Tim’s father, Harry, a detective in Ryme City. Quickly getting to jokes, we learn that Detective Pikachu is addicted to coffee and the first new Pokémon is shown—Ludicolo.
A number of other Pokémon are shown as the trailer goes on, focusing heavily on Tim and Detective Pikachu’s search for Tim’s father. Other Pokémon returning from the first trailer with Greninja and Charizard getting more screen time. Other new Pokémon for the movie include Aipom, Flareon, Machamp, Snorlax, and many more. See if you can spot them all.
Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith are being joined by Bill Nighy, Rita Ora, Suki Waterhouse, and Ken Watanabe in the live-action cast. Detective Pikachu was filmed in London in 2017, and the movie’s Ryme City appears to be a fictionalized version of that city. Last November saw the first trailer for the movie released, shocking Pokémon fans with the movie’s take on the Pokémon universe.
Detective Pikachu is based in the 2016 Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. The spin-off Pokémon game was modestly successful and was later picked up by Legendary Entertainment for a film adaptation. Warner Bros is distributing the film outside of Japan. Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens, Goosebumps) directed the movie. Detective Pikachu is the first live-action Pokémon movie and excitement has been building online. Check out the new Detective Pikachu trailer below.
