Mortal Kombat 11 mod removes the 30fps cap on fatalities and other cinematics

With Mortal Kombat 11, NetherRealm Studios followed the all-too-common practice of locking the game’s cinematics at 30fps. However, PC players can now remove that restriction thanks to a new Mortal Kombat 11 mod.

Fighting games in general enforce a locked 60 fps. The genre emphasizes frame-specific timing, meaning that they must be played at at 60 fps for the smoothest possible experience. However, Mortal Kombat 11 locks its cinematics to 30 fps. The becomes more jarring because the game plays a number of cinematics in the middle of matches. Aside from story mode and pre-fight cinematics, Fatalities, Fatal Blows, and other “-alities” all switch to 30fps when triggered.

Additionally, the game also locks its user interfaces at 30fps. This includes not just the main menu, but also the “Krypt” where players go to unlock items.

This new Mortal Kombat 11 mod addresses all of these concerns. Developed by modder Endri Lauson, it completely uncaps the frame rate for both the cinematics and the UI. Additionally, it also changes the way the game handles Ultrawide monitors. Previously, black bars would appear in the extra space outside of the playfield. Now, players can see beyond these boundaries. The actual playing field however remains the same.

In the description of their YouTube video featuring the mod, Lauson states that “this game is amazing and deserves to be played in 60fps. Fans deserve to have an amazing experience. I hope you all enjoy and have fun!”

Additionally, Lauson notes that the Krypt mode is “incredibly unoptimized.” Players on lower-spec PCs may not see drastic changes in the mode, even with the mod. NetherRealm likely locked the framerate in the Krypt for this reason, despite it being a non-cinematic mode.

In addition to this, Lauson also mentions that the mod may be flagged by some anti-virus programs. Anti-virus programs can flag the mod as a key-logger due to how it wait for certain inputs to uncap the framerate while running the game. More importantly, anti-cheat software may flag it as a cheat. They however give their assurance that it isn’t any of these.

For anyone willing to take Lauson’s word and try out the mod, instructions on how to download and install it are on the description of their YouTube video.
