The Bureau: XCOM Declassified Debuts Third-Person Shooter Gameplay

This is your new view of the battlefield in XCOM. Do you like it? 2K Games hopes so.

BioShock 2's development team is now working on the reboot for XCOM titled The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, and has the footage to prove it exists. The game was originally announced in 2006 and has taken so long that XCOM: Enemy Unknown was able to beat it to the punch. Nonetheless, this is nothing like the previous XCOM, or any game from the series for that matter, outside of the presence of aliens and strategy gameplay. It's a third-person shooter set in 1962, a far stretch from the top-down view of space marines battling evil aliens in the other games.

This is a big move by 2K Games that can go really well or extremely bad. XCOM: Enemy Unknown proved last year that the classic style that the series has adopted since 1994 still works wonderfully. Unfortunately, it was only rewarded with one-million sales, a number which doesn't reflect its successful entertainment values. Although that's not the sole reason for this reboot, 2K Games understands that XCOM can be a flagship game if it finds a way to make it appealing to more demographics. Looking to the popularity of the shooter genre has been a natural move.

The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will release on August 20th for PC, PS3, and 360.
