Telling Lies trailer

E3 2019 | Telling Lies trailer shows off the “open world” Her Story follow-up

The latest trailer for Her Story creator Sam Barlow and Annapurna Interactive’s latest game Telling Lies has been revealed at the PC Gaming Show at E3 2019, giving us a better look at the FMV follow-up to the popular Her Story. The new Telling Lies trailer shows off the gameplay a little better, which the developer is calling an “open world” FMV game.

Sam Barlow is the writer and creator of Her Story and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, and he’s back working on Telling Lies, his first game since Her Story became a break-out hit. It stars Logan Marshall-Green, Kerry Bishé, Alexandra Shipp, and Angela Sarafyan, who play the game’s four main characters, “four private lives shattered by a terrible lie.”

The developer says that Telling Lies features over 10 hours of footage, although obviously players won’t get to see all of that video in just a single playthrough. The trailer describes the game as allowing players to “explore a stolen database of private moments.” Players will have to view footage, get information, and move to other cameras around the world, giving it an “open world” feel. Going by the trailer, it looks like players will be able to pause the footage at any time, and search other videos for specific words and phrases, which may give them access to new information.

It’s a detective game basically, with non-linear storytelling similar to Her Story, except much more expansive. You have to slowly piece together the truth behind the inciting incident that links these four people together. There’s currently no release date, although Annapurna is saying that it’s coming this year, and as of now it’s only on PC and macOS. Her Story eventually came to mobiles too, but Telling Lies may be too ambitious for iOS and Android.
