Splatoon 3 not in production yet according to producer

With Splatoon 2 heading to its final Splatfest, players thoughts are turning to the possibility of a Splatoon 3 being in the works. That said, a sequel to the colorful, ink-based shooter doesn’t seem to be coming any time soon. Producer Hisashi Nogami stated the team hasn’t made any plans for the series’ future.

In an interview in this week’s issue of Famitsu, Nogami confirmed that planning for Splatoon 2 started after work on the original was finished. Following Splatoon 2 however, the team instead went on to focus on its Octo Expansion, as well as subsequent updates to it. The team has been too busy working on these to even begin thinking about the a sequel.

As part of this, Nogami did mention that the team was still working on updates to Splatoon 2 beyond the final Splatfest. While it won’t be releasing any new weapons, the team will still continue to release balance updates for the game. Also, the game will continue to have Monthly League Battles.

In addition to all this, Nogami mentioned that he does want to something give back to the players who have continued to support the game. While he didn’t have anything concrete that he could announce at the time, he mentioned that whatever the plan may be will most likely happen if players continue to support the game.

Of course, Splatoon 2 isn’t the only game Nogami is working on. He also acts as the producer for Animal Crossing. The latter’s latest installment, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is currently in production for a 2020 release. With this in mind, it could be that anything concrete about a third Splatoon game will only be revealed after the latter’s release.

Hopefully, players get an inkling of what Nogami is hinting at for Splatoon 2‘s community before then. In the meantime, they’ll just have to continue to enjoy Nintendo’s unique shooter.
