When Microsoft revealed the Xbox One and announced that the new-and-improved version of Kinect would have to be hooked up to the console at all times for the device to function, a lot of gamers cringed with a mix of disappointment and fear.
Having a camera in your living space that is constantly watching you has proven to be an unpopular feature of Microsoft's next-gen console. As such, the company has spoken out to assuage gamers' fears regarding personal privacy.
MS released the following statement to The Verge regarding government spying via the Kinect:
Absent a new law, we don’t believe the government has the legal authority to compel us or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data.
We’d aggressively challenge in court any attempts to try and force us to do so.
