Today’s Destiny 2 reveal stream confirmed that the PS5 will support free PS4 game upgrades, similar to Microsoft’s plan for the Xbox Series X. Sony has yet to announce how many games will support this feature, though Bungie revealed that at least Destiny 2 will allow players to carry their account from the PS4 to the PS5, including paid DLC and items.
There were rumors that the PlayStation 5 was set to follow in the Xbox Series X’s footsteps by way of allowing players to have free game upgrades. This means that if they purchase a game on the PS4, they’d be able to make the upgrade to the next-gen version of that game for free. The Destiny 2 reveal confirms that, at least for Bungie’s FPS, this will be the case.
However, it’s worth remembering that Destiny 2 is a free-to-play game, so assuming that it remains that way on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, they would not have had to pay for the game on next-gen consoles anyway. But the fact that all paid content for the game will also carry over for players who have purchased it makes it different from cross-save.
Cross-save allows players to sync their Destiny 2 progress across multiple platforms, but it did not allow any purchases to be carried over. This included DLC and its in-game currency, Silver, which was locked to the platform the player had purchased it on. That this won’t be the case when players redownload Destiny 2 on the PS5 is a major advantage for players, as they won’t have to worry about leaving behind their paid content when making the upgrade to next-gen.
Sony’s PS5 game reveal event is set to be held on June 11, and we could receive some more details regarding its plans for next-gen upgrades. Considering that this year will see the release of major PS4 games such as The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Cyberpunk 2077, current owners will certainly be hoping that they’ll be able to play these games on their PS5s after they make the jump.
