Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been officially confirmed, with the sequel set to release in theaters on April 8, 2022. The film will see Ben Schwartz return as the voice of the titular hero, with Jim Carrey and James Marsden also expected to star.
Sonic 2 was announced by Paramount Pictures, confirming the inevitable following the strong box office performances of the 2020 film. One of few box office success stories of this year, Sonic the Hedgehog raked in $306 million at the worldwide box office, despite not being able to release in theaters in China. It’s now set for a belated theatrical release in the country on July 31. It is the second highest-grossing film of the year, behind Sony’s Bad Boys for Life which pulled in $425 million worldwide.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could see a number of familiar faces make an appearance. Tails showed up during a mid-credits scene in the original film, and it also saw Sonic being hunted down by a tribe of echidnas similar to Knuckles. Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik was also shown with an altered appearance that had more in common with his look in the video games, suggesting that the sequel will lean more heavily on the games it’s based on.

With many films such as Tenet and Avatar 2 being pushed back due to the pandemic, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is at least releasing far enough into the future that it could stick to this release date. With the original film also receiving a delay of its own after its controversial Sonic character design was completely overhauled, hopefully Sonic 2‘s release is an altogether smoother affair.
