Nintendo Has No Plans To “Abandon 3D Or Cease To Make New Propositions In 3D”

Just a few weeks back, Nintendo introduced a 3D-less version of its current line of handhelds to market, leading many to wonder if the company is ultimately planning to phase out the once promising feature in due time. According to Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, 3D will continue to be a focus over at Nintendo despite the introduction of the 2DS.

During the company's latest financial Q&A, Iwata pointed to The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds as evidence of Nintendo's commitment to 3D, emphasizing the fact that they have no plans to abandon the technology anytime soon.

Speaking to the rationale behind the 2DS, Iwata explained:

We are offering such an option in order to further propel the popularity of the Nintendo 3DS platform in the overseas markets. Nintendo 2DS is, however, simply one of the options for consumers and we will continue to offer the existing Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL platforms in the overseas markets, and we are not saying that we will abandon 3D or cease to make new propositions in 3D. “The Legend of Zelda” title that we are going to release toward the end of the year is a superb showcase of the 3D effect, featuring a top-down style and offering a new form of gameplay by taking advantage of the 3D effect vertically.

What do you think? Is it worth Nintendo's time, money, and effort to continue pumping resources into the 3D space for its handheld games? Would they be better off kicking it to the curb, allowing them to spend more time in other aspects of game design? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
