PSVR 2 confirmed by Sony, set to bring big improvements

PSVR 2 is officially in development. Sony shared a new PlayStation Blog post today, revealing that the “next generation” of virtual reality is on the way, in the form of a new PS5 PSVR 2 headset. The peripheral looks to boast several major improvements over its PS4 predecessor, the original PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD).

As revealed via the official PlayStation Blog, PSVR 2 is the next-generation of virtual reality for consoles. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 and seeks to provide the “ultimate entertainment experience,” courtesy of increased immersion. The reveal touts “dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity” when using PSVR 2 over the original PlayStation VR. But, what kind of improvements does that actually translate to?

The next-gen PS5 PSVR 2 headset features improved display resolution and field of view. This will enable more true-to-life, encompassing images packed with sharper game assets. It’s also safe to assume that the PlayStation 5 will push better quality graphics in general, along with more densely packed environments.

All of those changes aim to increase visual fidelity, though PSVR 2 is also looking to implement gameplay and quality of life improvements. There will be upgrades to headset tracking and input, plus all-new PlayStation VR 2 motion controllers with the same goals. The new PSVR 2 controllers will share key DualSense features, though maintain “great ergonomics” at the same time. Only time will tell if the controller patent uncovered this time last year still mirrors the final design.

Finally, just “a single cord” connects the PSVR 2 to the PS5 console. This boosts ease-of-use greatly by taking any headache out of the setup, though isn’t quite as convenient as the standalone Oculus Quest 2. Still, the decision to maintain a physical connection helps to “[enable] a high-fidelity visual experience.”

Sony didn’t give fans a first look at any of the new PlayStation VR 2 hardware in the reveal post. It did confirm, however, that the PlayStation 5 PSVR 2 release date will be 2022 at the earliest.
