Penello On Xbox One DRM: “We Never Got A Chance To Have A Rational Conversation About What We Were Trying To Do”

A digital-focused future is where the video game industry is headed, gamers simply aren't ready to make the jump yet—that is, according to Microsoft's Albert Penello.

In an interview with Engadget, Penello lamented the rough reveal of Xbox One, telling the outlet, "I do feel like we never got a chance to have a rational conversation about what we were trying to do." While Xbox One's policies have changed dramatically since it was first revealed, Penello still sees the merit in the company's original vision.

"Sometimes the customer just says, 'No. I look at it this way, I'm done, I've made up my mind,'" he went on to add. "And we go, well, we've gotta fix it. It's not worth it. And that's where I think we were on the digital stuff. We'll get back to some of the cool stuff, and we have a lot of the cool stuff still in there."

Will we see Microsoft slowly morph Xbox One into the console it originally envisioned before all of the backlash? Who knows? Penello believes gamers' outlook will slowly change over time. "We just think that's the way the future's gonna go. We may have been right. What we were wrong about was that it's just too soon. People just weren't ready to make that leap right away."

Perhaps if the desire is there and gamers are willing to accept a Steam-like model on console, the Big M will make some changes down the line.
