New Deus Ex Game On The Way After Embracer Group Buys Eidos and Crystal Dynamics From Square Enix [UPDATE]

Update: The comment about reviving the Deus Ex IP as Eidos Montreal’s first Embracer game was unfortunately taken out of context. Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi was describing the studio’s history and how Deus Ex: Human Revolution became the studio’s first game. The studio does have several projects in progress at the moment but we don’t know if any of them will be a new Deus Ex game.

Original Story:

Eidos Montreal has confirmed it is working on a brand new entry in the Deus Ex franchise following Embracer Group’s purchase of the developer alongside Square Enix Montreal and Crystal Dynamics. The deal, which will see Embracer Group purchase the three developers directly from Square Enix for $300 million, gives the company access to a variety of former Square Enix properties alongside the three studios.

Tomb Raider Crystal Dynamics

Announced earlier today by the Embracer Group, the acquisition will see the Swedish video game holding company take control of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Square Enix Montreal along with over 5- franchises from Square Enix’s back catalog. This includes the likes of Tomb Raider, Thief, and Legacy of Kain in addition to the already announced Deus Ex.

In a conference call this morning to provide more information about the agreement, Eidos Montreal studio head David Anfossi confirmed that his team is working on a brand new Deus Game game. Speaking in the conference call (via ShackNews), he said “we are crazy people who have decided to revive the Deus Ex IP as our first game” and that it would involve a “new team, a very complex production, a new tech, and a new studio.” According to Anfossi, the game will also be made using Unreal Engine 5.

Embracer Group’s acquisition involves eight different locations across the three studios and more than 1,000 employees. The $300 million deal will be paid entirely in cash and should close between July and September of this year. It is not the first time that the company has made shock acquisitions. It has made a number of high-profile purchases over the last few years and now counts THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, Koch Media, and Gearbox Entertainment.
