During today's Steam Dev Day event, Valve announced that the Steam Controller has been redesigned. The company has opted to remove the touchscreen and instead add a d-pad and typical ABXY button layout.
Twitter user Leszek Godlewski posted the following image of what is apparently the new prototype.
With regards to why Valve made these changes, the company said it found that the touchscreen was a distraction to the player, and the more traditional button layout makes compatibility with older games a bit easier to handle. I'm guessing it'll help Valve keep the cost of the control pad down, too. The controller will be powered by two AA batteries and use a low latency Bluetooth connection.
