Major Nelson Announces Departure from Xbox

Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb has been at Microsoft for just over two decades and been one of Xbox‘s most prominent faces for most of that time. However, he’s now announced that he’s moving on from the company.

Major Nelson is going to “work on the next chapter” of his career

Hyrb tweeted about his departure in a three-part thread. He said he wanted to step back and “work on the next chapter” of his career, which he didn’t spell out (although he said he is working on “a few projects”). He even thanked the Xbox fans that have supported him over the years and those at Xbox for giving him the opportunity to have a more direct conversation with users. He backed that up in another tweet expressing his gratitude and saying that he cherished his interactions with players. The final tweet in the announcement thread only stated that the Official Xbox Podcast is going on hiatus for the summer and will come back “in a new format.”

Various users reached out to Hyrb after the announcement. In addition to the replies and DMs that he said made him well up, the Xbox account thanked him and the PlayStation account even saluted him. Xbox CEO Phil Spencer called him a friend and said it was “awesome to work alongside” him for all these years. Xbox corporate vice president Sarah Bond also called him a “consummate pro” and stated she couldn’t wait to see what he does next.

While he started as the editor-in-chief of MSN music at Microsoft, Hyrb moved over to the Xbox in 2003 and became the director of programming for Xbox Live. He was known for his long-running Xbox-focused podcast.
