Bethesda Sues Minecraft Devs Over One Stupid Word

[Update: You can read more here on Markus Persson's blog.]

Markus Persson, a programmer codenamed "Notch" for Minecraft devs Mojang, has revealed in a series of recent Tweets that Bethesda is suing them over the word "Scrolls", the name of their future game. That's because it would be confusing to idiots who can't tell the difference between "Scrolls" and "The Elder Scrolls". The above screenshot is the first page of the claim, written in Swedish, out of fifteen dead-tree pages.

Yeah, this is what the world's legal system boils down to… it's pathetic. Why don't I just create a game with every possible permutation of letters and numbers in the title, trademark it, and then sue everyone? I could be the gaming equivalent of that guy who earns hundreds of thousands of dollars suing every shop that doesn't have handicapped access.

Markus Persson, thankfully, has a cool head on Twitter:

I still <3 Bethesda. This is hopefully just lawyers being lawyers.

Hey, journalists! A million of you want a statement from me, so I'll make a blog post when I get home with all the info I have! 🙂

(I will not* accept bribes for exclusives)

Ugh, don't get me started on exclusives. I only have enough rage for one topic a day, thank you…
