Apple Foldable iPhone Rumored To Debut With Liquid Metal Hinge

If reports are believed, Apple may launch its first foldable iPhone this year with a liquid metal hinge. The tech giant is reportedly planning to use liquid metal for the hinge. This aims to improve the performance, durability, and longevity of its signature phones.

Apple might debut its foldable iPhone with liquid metal hinge

Apple will reportedly debut its foldable iPhone with a liquid metal hinge. The new foldable iPhone will resemble a book-like structure. A user named yeux1122 reportedly revealed on the Korean platform Naver that the main body of the new foldable iPhone will most likely be crafted from titanium (via India Today).

For those unversed, liquid metal is a shapeless metal alloy developed by a research team at the California Institute of Technology.

Apple intends to use liquid metal for its foldable devices. This will help the device maintain flexibility and a spring-like action for impressive longevity. Liquid metal may be light in weight, but it is tough and robust in its functioning, which is crucial for the company’s new foldable iPhones.

Reportedly, the new foldable iPhones may measure up to 5.5 mm thick, and the liquid metal hinge makes it malleable and functional. Interestingly, Apple secured a “perpetual, worldwide, fully-paid, exclusive license” for liquid metal intellectual property in consumer electronics. The Cupertino-based tech giant has been exploring the idea of liquid metal since as far back as 2010.

The new foldable phone will feature a 5.5-inch external display with a hole-punch camera. The internal folding display measures up to 7.8 inches and includes a hole-punch camera in the upper left corner. Apple might ditch its signature facial-recognition feature and opt for a side-mounted Touch ID sensor instead.

Furthermore, there will be one selfie shooter on each side along with a dual rear camera setup. Apple will reportedly debut its much-awaited foldable iPhone in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Experts estimate it will cost $2,400.
