Call of Duty Devs Shut Down Reports of a Standalone Zombies Game

Call of Duty developers have addressed rumors about a secret standalone Zombies game in development at the studio. Their response came a few hours after the news went viral on social media, with many players having mixed reactions.

Call of Duty refutes claims of a standalone Zombies game

On February 23, Dexerto reported that a rumored Call of Duty standalone Zombies game is in the works. The post read, “A standalone Call of Duty Zombies title is reportedly being planned for next-gen consoles. The title is said to debut alongside a separate multiplayer entry.”

The post went viral, garnering over 1 million views within a day. This prompted Call of Duty’s official X (formerly Twitter) account to respond to the news. “The rumor factory is working overtime. This ain’t it,” was the official response.

Ever since the news broke, fans have had a mixed reaction. Since recent Call of Duty games have failed to impress its core audience, some fans were not happy with the potential standalone game. Some fans even suggested that the studio was trying to charge gamers more for a mode that was already available in the base game.

On the other hand, fans of the Zombies mode said the decision was long overdue.

However, the criticism didn’t stop even after the studio denied the rumors. Some fans continued to argue that a standalone Zombies game is what the fans want.

Meanwhile, a fan even took the opportunity to criticize how the quality of the games have reduce after the exit of Jason Blundell, a prominent figure who helped shape the Call of Duty Zombies franchise.

Zombies is a survival mode in the Call of Duty games where players fight endless waves of zombies while updating their gear. The mode first appeared in Call of Duty: World at War, and has often been a part of Treyarch-developed titles like Black Ops series.

After Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 received less-than-favorable reception and saw a significant drop in sales, the developer announced that it would no longer aim for back-to-back releases for the Black Ops or Modern Warfare series. Although a new rumor suggests that the 2026 release could be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 by Infinity Ward.
