Analyst Warns PS6 & Xbox Next-Gen Price Could Go Up to $999

The world of gaming is anticipating the next-generation console war between Sony and Microsoft, but prices are rumored to be lofty. Fans are eagerly awaiting what’s in store with the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and the new Xbox console. However, an analyst has warned that the prices of these next-gen consoles could surge up to $999.

PS6 and next-gen Xbox reportedly will have a higher price

Rumors suggest the PS6 and next-gen Xbox will come with a heftier price tag. This is set to reflect their cutting-edge technology and advanced capabilities.

With Sony having raised the prices of the PlayStation 5, expectations are rising for the next-gen consoles. Analysts believe that the starting points for the next generation of consoles have just gotten higher. Current projections suggest getting ready to potentially spend $1,000 on the PS6 and Xbox Project Helix.

Sony’s move isn’t surprising, given the economic and political factors at play. However, veteran Circana games industry analyst Mat Piscatella notes that “this one is a bigger price jump than I had been anticipating (via Games Radar).”

Joost van Dreunen, video games professor at NYU and industry researcher, says the U.S. administration’s efforts to disrupt the global economy are backfiring as expected. Console manufacturers signaled back in 2024 that tariffs would impact pricing. As predicted, the cost of DRAM and NAND has surged 80-90% since the start of 2026.

van Dreuen attributes this trend to AI data centers consuming significant hardware resources and distribution challenges in parts of Asia. The PS5 Pro’s price tag of $900 is indicative of an emerging pattern. He believes that Sony has anticipated potential escalations and incorporated flexibility into its pricing strategy.

Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of consultancy firm Kantan Games, believes Sony is opting for a single price hike in 2026, factoring in future fluctuations. The strategy gives them room to offer discounts if needed.

“I think $999 at least for one variant of the PS6 is not impossible,” Toto stated. Joost van Dreunen seconds his belief, agreeing that the industry is moving towards a point where a $1,000 console becomes standard, making console gaming a luxury expenditure.
