Solo

What to Play After Watching Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story has had its run in theatres, and the jury’s still out on its performance. As a Space Western, it’s scrappy, wacky, and packed full of criminal activities. If you left your Solo screening wanting a little more, we’re here to help. We’ve got a list of games that will give your Star Wars fix, all Wookies optional.

5. Star Wars Battlefront 2

This seems like the obvious choice, but that doesn’t make it a bad one. It’s probably a bit on those to recommend a recent Star Wars title that tanked in its own way, but hey. Life is short, and despite lootboxes, we found SW Battlefront 2 undoubtedly entertaining. People were wanting a little more excitement out of Solo, so why not go off the rails? Pick up a game where you can kick ass as a hero or a villain, and do sick aerial stunts all damn day. It’s more fun piloting an X-Wing than watching some other idiot do it, that’s for sure.

4. Mass Effect 3

Solo was a little light on the emotional beats. Heck, it was a little light on the meaningful emotional connections. Luckily, plenty of other games set in space have successfully tread that ground. The most famous of all those franchises is Mass Effect. Want to go on a badass cosmic adventure that isn’t mindless fun? Try on Mass Effect 3 for size. There’s a lot to love there, including romantic clichés and the requisite galactic hotties that Star Wars has. Just think about the stuff that we love about space, but with moral consequences. Now that’s a good time.

3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

This is a bit of a blast from the past, but so was Han Solo. The Star Wars franchise has moved on from that game, but Solo has proven that it’s not too late to milk forgotten relics for money. Why not dust off your copy of KOTOR and give it some sugar? It’ll work a treat if Mass Effect 3 was missing some Force-flavoured action. The age old tale of being caught between the light and the dark plays out incredibly in KOTOR. For an RPG that was conceived well over a decade ago, its core concerns still resonate. Don’t worry if you haven’t got a copy of the game anymore; it’s sitting pretty on the shelves of mobile app stores. Sure, it’s not exactly the underdog buddy comedy of Solo, but we’re fine with that.

2. Star Fox Zero

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, Fox McCloud was a bloody hero. If Han Solo’s mercenary wiles and his anthropomorphic best friend appealed to you, then give Star Fox Zero a crack. You definitely won’t regret it. If you’ve ever played Smash, then you’re familiar with the handsome Mr McCloud and his furry mates. They’ve got a predilection for squeezing into cockpits together, much like the leading men of Solo. Honestly, the similarities go beyond physical. Star Fox Zero is perfect for the scrappy, seat-of-your-pants pilot experience. Screw X-Wings; Arwings are where it’s at. Plus, have you ever seen an X-Wing go full Gundam and bust out incredible manouvers, or hack a computer? These capable critters make Han Solo and Lando look like rank amateurs. Plus, everyone’s mother and their dog can afford WiiU games now.

1. Styling Star

Everyone was gushing over Lando Calrissian when the trailers for Solo came out. He was the king of space criminal realness, and he delivered plenty of iconic looks throughout the movie. While Han had a much blander wardrobe, Lando and Qi’ra were serving us a cosmic eleganza extravaganza. If you were more inspired by the fashion than the fighting, we don’t blame you. In fact, we’ve got the perfect solution to Solo’s average threads; Styling Star. Want to come up with beautiful galactic designs? You can do that without pesky interruptions from the Force. Want to make something so sickening that Padmé Amidala wouldn’t be able to live without it? You can definitely do that. There’s endless possibilities for you out there in the Milky Way, and all you’ve got to do is pick up your Nintendo 3DS. Try and recreate some of Lando’s most head-turning looks if you dare.

Even if you thought Solo was the bees knees, we’re sure that we’ve given you some food for thought. Star Wars is more than just old men in robes shooting lightning at each other, and Solo drives that point home if nothing else.
