The VR market has exploded in the last couple of years. What used to be a choice between the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive (or PSVR a little later on) has become a lot more complicated and it seems like everyone is making their own VR headset.
Next week, Oculus is launching the Quest, a self-contained sensorless headset, and an update to the Rift, the aptly-named Rift S. While those will be available in the immediate future, they’re far from the only VR headsets coming out this year. Valve will be releasing their Index, and HTC is coming out with a self-contained VR solution in the form of the Vive Focus Plus.

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: It’s hard to chose which VR headset to go with for the 1.5/2nd-gen of hardware. When VR first hit the mainstream a few years ago it was easy, you just went with Oculus or Vive. Then PSVR came along and showed that people were more enthusiastic about a cheaper headset with less intensive hardware requirements. Now everyone is getting into the VR game, which is odd, because it’s still very niche. I’d say the Oculus Quest will be the most interesting to follow because it’s the one most likely to bring a semblance of the PC experience while giving the freedom of not having to use PC hardware or separate sensors.
Mack Ashworth, lead editor: Oculus Quest gets my vote. While I’m a little worried about how the hardware will hold up when hit by more demanding games in the future, it looks pretty damn solid for the here and now. The fact that it is standalone is huge for me, as that makes it easily portable. Sure, portable VR exists already, but those headsets require a phone. The Quest is totally standalone, and that’s huge.
Michael Leri, features editor: It’s honestly hard to pick because most of them seem to be going in slightly different directions. The futurist part of me likes how Valve Index and Oculus Rift S are pushing forward and trying to technical powerhouses but I like the Oculus Quest’s journey to bring VR to more people. VR both has to get in more hands, which is what the latter helps do yet also impress the hardcore, which is what the former helps do. VR might have to exist in two states like this and hopefully both will help the medium push forward.
