We used the FaceApp old filter to bring game characters closer to death

The FaceApp old filter has taken over social media feeds (and probably the rights to your photos) over the past few days as everyone is thrilled to look at old versions of themselves. As such, we took a look at what some of the most iconic gaming characters look like once they reach an older age. Since gaming focuses so much on athletic people in their prime, the results were pretty interesting to see. It also made us wish for a few more games starring old video game characters like Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Check out 10 of our favorite old video game characters below!

ALSO: Pokemon Sword and Shield version differences finally makes it worth buying both

FaceApp Old Video Game Characters | Aerith Gainsborough

Since Final Fantasy 7‘s Aerith certainly won’t make it to her old age, it is odd to see what could have been using FaceApp. In an alternate universe where Sephiroth doesn’t end her adventure early, Aerith ages gracefully over the years and continues to sell flowers to the people of Midgar. She’s probably the character least impacted by the aging filter and one people will still make erotic fan fiction of despite her geriatric status.

Old Video Game Characters | Arthur Morgan

To the surprise of nobody, Arthur Morgan still looks like a badass when aged several decades. The star of Red Dead Redemption 2 looks even cooler as an old man and is ready for more robberies. He’ll never live a life on the right side of the law, but Morgan is still one heck of a cool dude even into his 70s. Some might say he already moves like an old man in RDR2 anyway.

Old Video Game Characters | Kasumi

Hopefully this doesn’t ruin the image of your Dead or Alive 6 waifu, Kasumi. But even though she looks old, she also looks like she can still kick some ass. Although if her age has gotten to her joints, then there will probably be plenty of successors to pick up the mantle. Either way, she’s going to be one cool grandma.

Old Video Game Characters | Kazuma Kiryu

Could you have a cooler grandfather than Kiryu? The answer is clearly no. Not only does the former Yakuza leader have a heart of gold, he looks like he could still take on some thugs if they try to mess with his loved ones. With age comes experience and wisdom, and you probably would not want to get into a fist fight against an older Kiryu. However, it’s doubtful he’s doing much brawling nowadays, rather enjoying his life away from the spotlight and making sure Haruka is doing all right from a distance.

Old Video Game Characters | Kratos

It seems that gods age rather slowly in the world of God of War considering how much time had past between the original trilogy and the new game. So, FaceApp may have aged Kratos a few millennia for this photo. As one can see, Kratos has aged like a fine wine. Sure, there is some gray in his beard and he has a few more wrinkles, but he still looks like the last guy you would want to get into a fight with. No matter what type of mischief his son Atreus gets into, you can be sure that he will be there to set things straight.

Old Video Game Characters | Lara Croft

All the stress of adventuring and being on the verge of constant death has really gotten to Lara Croft. After all, who could survive so many near death encounters and not get some grey hairs out of it? Regardless of that, she’s still an active archaeologist and her contributions to the scientific and historical community will far outweigh the wear and tear on her body.

Old Video Game Characters | Nathan Drake

We got a glimpse of a slightly older Nathan Drake at the end of Uncharted 4, but when aged a few decades past that he starts to look just like Victor “Goddamn” Sullivan. It is really uncanny how close he looks to Sully, and he only really needs a great mustache to complete his look. While Drake’s adventuring days are finally over, we’re sure his daughter Cassie is getting into all sorts of trouble. So, don’t be surprised if he has to grumble about being “too old for this” and bailing her out of trouble from time to time while Elena drinks wine and wonders why she can’t have a relaxing post-retirement life.

Old Video Game Characters | Phoenix Wright

Phoenix Wright was the least realistic character that we could get to pass through FaceApp’s identification test. Not much has changed for Mr. Wright, although he does have some wrinkles from his many years as a defense attorney. It’s a pretty graceful aging for him, and he certainly looks better than during his “homeless” phase during Apollo Justice. The moral is that anime doesn’t age.

Old Video Game Characters | Ryo Hazuki

It is totally possible that Yu Suzuki is planning for players to see Ryo Hazuki at this age at the end of the Shenmue series, but that would probably take 100 sequels to get there. So, we cheated a bit and decided to see what Ryo will look like after he finally learns the truth behind his father’s death and moves on with his life. He inexplicably still has that bandage on, which seems a bit ridiculous considering it’s been 50 years, but other than that Ryo still looks like a top-notch martial artist. One that is hopefully following the four tenants of Wude.

Old Video Game Characters | Venom Snake

We already know what Solid Snake and Big Boss will look like when older, so the most logical Metal Gear Solid choice to use with FaceApp was the star of The Phantom Pain. While not nearly as well-groomed as Big Boss, Venom still looks like a master of espionage. It’s too bad that he won’t reach this age due to his fateful encounter with Solid Snake, but he’ll still fulfill his role as the most legendary decoy around.
